Heifer spaying is a management tool with many
advantages. For cattlemen unfamiliar with the procedure,
here’s a quick review. Spaying female cattle is the
surgical removal of the ovaries, or female castration.
This removes the primary source of estrogen, the hormone
that causes estrus so riding is diminished or
eliminated. It also, removes the source of the ova,
which combined with sperm cells after mating creates
unwanted
pregnancies. Spaying heifers maintains stocker and feeder
heifers in a neutered status. Spaying also lets us
detect early pregnant stocker heifers accidentally bred
at a young age.
